APA Style - Common Mistakes

  • Avoid piecemeal papers.  Sometimes called “layer caking,” these papers include a series of series of direct quotations separated by and held together by small amounts of original narrative.
  • Do not overuse verbatim excerpts and direct quotations. This could make readers and/or the evaluator skeptical of the originality of the overall work.
  • Remember, using words, photographs, graphics, music or any other original materials created by others without identifying the source is called plagiarism and often is illegal.
  • Be cautious with your use of the English language.  As the author, you are responsible for your written communication
